Swiss Ambassador Alexandre Fasel: Update on Brexit and the Swiss citizens' rights


Ambassador Alexandre Fasel informed at the FOSSUK AGM about the Swiss citizens' rights in the UK. Below a short summary: What does Settled Status mean:

  • Lived in the UK on continuous 5 years

  • Started living in the UK by 31.12.2020 (or by the date the UK leaves the EU without a deal)

  • Application Deadline: 30.06.2021 or 31.12.2020 if the UK leaves the EU without deal

  • Fees: it is free to apply

What you need for Settled Status:

  • Proof of identity - valid passport - biometric residence card - biometric residence permit

  • Proof of continuous residence - You need to have lived in the UK for at least 6 - 12 month period for 5 years in a row

  • Check of criminal records - Home Office will check if you have done any crime

Process will take up to 10 minutes and within 3-4 days you will get an e-mail with the approval. Note: there is nothing being sent to you by post!

What does Pre-Settled Status mean:

  • Living in the UK by 31.12.2020

  • Change to settled status when you get over 5 years

  • With this status, you can stay in the UK for further 5 years

If you leave the UK:

  • Settled Status: EU citizens: can spend 5 years in a row outside the UK Swiss citizens: can spend 4 years in a row outside the UK

  • Pre-Settled Status: 2 years in a row can be spent outside the UK
